Area Activity Guide: Mt. Hope Cemetery
April 2015
While it may not initially sound like a good way to spend a spirited afternoon, a visit to the beautiful Mt. Hope Cemetery is just that. Located just a mile up the road (walking and biking distance!) from South and Hickory Place, Mt. Hope is a Rochester institution. Beyond the graves of countless famous individuals, the cemetery boasts 196 acres of gorgeous tombstones and sculptures, a fountain, a gazebo, stone chapels, loads of wildlife (it’s actually been named a “Certified Wildlife Habitat” by the National Wildlife Foundation), and picturesque landscape. If photography is a hobby or your profession, Mt. Hope is basically a dream come true.
In addition to visiting in a casual manner, the Friends of Mt. Hope offer year-round guided tours and host events at the cemetery. Their website links to information about the animals and incredible varieties of mushrooms that can be found onsite. It’s pretty incredible to look at all that can be experienced right around the corner from South and Hickory Place. If you’ve never been, we highly suggest going to explore the wonder that is Mt. Hope Cemetery – and bring your camera!
